The media and entertainment arm of Alibaba (BABA) signed a multiyear licensing agreement with a Walt Disney (DIS) subsidiary Monday that will create the largest Disney animation collection in China.
Alibaba’s Digital Media and Entertainment Group signed the agreement with Disney subsidiary Buena Vista International, providing more than 1,000 episodes of animated Disney content that will be available on Alibaba’s streaming video website Youku and other distribution channels, the companies said.
In December, Youku signed content licensing deals with Comcast (CMCSA) units NBCUniversal and Sony Pictures Television, for movies and related content.
Alibaba said the Disney content will be available on its SmartTV and set-top box platform that’s available in nearly 30 million households. The platform is also designed for e-commerce transactions.
Alibaba shares added 0.4% to close at 177.44 on the stock market today. Disney shares were up 0.3% to 103.39.
Alibaba completed its acquisition of Youku Tudou in 2015 in a deal valued at about $4 billion. Alibaba officially established its digital media and entertainment unit in October last year and has said it aims to become the Netflix of China.
